It's Official – We Are the Oldest Choir in the World!
After months of nervous anticipation, the waiting is finally over. Guinness World Records have confirmed that we, the St. John’s House Choir from Kirk Hammerton, York, are officially the “Oldest Choir in the World.”
St John's House Manager, Andrea Marks added "There is no doubt that our Choir has grown in confidence and ability since they first sang together in 2012. Recently they've performed in a Music Hall at St. John's House, a Community Concert alongside the children and residents of our local community and most recently in an open air 40's style concert. We are absolutely delighted to witness the many positive benefits that singing is bringing to our residents. Our weekly Choir practices, public performances and now this latest accolade have given them a real sense of purpose and well being, we are so proud of them."
We develop a full programme of activities according to the wishes and interests of the residents. These range from exercise and craft classes through to day trips and evening and weekend outings. St John's House has a very active relationship with the village communities of Kirk Hammerton and neighbouring Green Hammerton, with local amenities including a general stores, post office and newsagents, public house, adult education classes, the Women's Institute and local churches. We use our wheelchair accessible vehicle for trips from the home both locally and further afield.
We believe our homes are the perfect size; large enough to provide all the facilities and services our residents require, small enough to retain a personal and homely feel.
Our extensive and beautiful gardens offer plenty of space to enjoy the outdoors whilst indoors the lounges and dining areas have been developed so there is plenty of choice for smaller groups to eat together. There are two lounges, three lounge/dining areas, one dining room and a sun lounge.
All of our 34 spacious private bedrooms have an en-suite facilities with views of the gardens or surrounding area. All rooms are connected to a central Nurse Call System to ensure an immediate response from staff.
Our nutritious and tasty meals are planned seasonally by the catering team and residents and we have a varied menu to cater for all tastes or medical requirements
"On behalf of all the family we just wanted to express our appreciation for the care which Dad received over the past two years .When Dad moved in he had been through a difficult time and was at a low ebb. He benefited greatly from the calm and friendly ethos of the home and the caring approach shown by all staff."Mr & Mrs R
If it’s going to be home it needs to feel like home which is why freedom and personal choice play a major part in life at St John’s House. Our regular residents meetings are lively and the feedback goes into making life at the home even better. Residents come and go as they please and our open door policy for family and friends means there is always a buzz around the home. Our recent investment in “Simply Unite” a PC and software specifically designed for elderly people means that the younger members of families are now actively communicating with their grandparents and great grandparents, by email and Skype.
Making the decision to move to a residential home is never taken lightly. Choosing a home with the facilities and an environment which suits each individual is extremely important, which is why we encourage you to visit the homes and ask us questions. Some future residents like to come along for a short stay first to see what life at the home is really like. We find this helps them to make the decision, removes the fear of the unknown for them and gives families peace of mind that their loved one is fully involved in decisions about their future home.
The Important Things
"We spend time with our residents – talking, listening, laughing and most of all enjoying each other’s company", Andrea Marks, Manager
We continually invest in our homes and the services we provide, developing homes that our residents tell us encompass the things that are important to them:
Friendly, caring staff who listen and act on our wishes
Clean rooms and lovely gardens
Good food and a varied menu
Choice and plenty of ways to express views
A safe environment
Residents have regular meetings to express their views and wishes and have a monthly one-to-one with their designated Care Partner to ensure that their care plan is providing a happy and fulfilled life at the home.
Putting People First
"The teams' awareness of resident's needs in relation to memory issues is superb."
Our care is second to none, putting the happiness of our residents at the centre of everything we do. Our team of qualified professionals provide the best care and support in a friendly environment. We do not employ agency staff and believe that our high level of care comes from knowing our residents, their personal preferences, needs and wishes. This comes from the close relationships that develop between residents and the Care Team and the trust the team earns by spending time and caring for individuals at our homes.
Why Choose Us?
We are a family business, placing family values at the heart of everything we do. We believe this is reflected not only in the care we provide but the caring environment at both our homes. Real friendships and strong relationships between our residents, with our staff and amongst extended family and friends characterises both our homes.
We hope you will want to make your home with us here at St John's House. However, the best way to see if St John's House is right for you is to come and visit us. We would love to meet you and you are welcome any time.
